Jakarta. President Joko Widodo on Monday deployed 798 teachers to schools in four provinces as part of a government drive to improve the quality of education in underdeveloped regions.

The teachers will be taking classes in Aceh, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua and West Papua for the next five years.

The group is part of a program called Guru Garis Depan, or Front Line Teachers, an initiative from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

“I wish all the teachers the best. I entrust the education of all children of this nation to you,” Joko said at the Presidential Palace on Monday.

Joko said the quality of education varied across the archipelago and called on teachers to help improve the country’s education infrastructure.

“Our goal is to minimize the educational disparity in the country,” Joko said. “Don’t forget to help our children build good characters. Remind them that rural children are Indonesian children, too.”
